Here is an interesting opinion piece in today's NY Times.  The author correctly points out that the symptoms of a common cold are caused by the inflammatory response of the body's immune system.  This is a good description of what we experience with IP when we increase our immune response with the MP!  Also, this backs up the idea that it is actually immune suppression that gives people, who supplement with huge doses of vitamin D, the impression that they no longer "catch" a cold!  What they are actually doing is suppressing the body's immune response to the viruses.

And I would also dispute the finding that the viruses of a common cold are basically harmless as stated in the article.  Given what we know now about the microbiota pea soup in our bodies, who's to say what IS and ISN'T truly harmful!

Here is the link to the article:

She could have made an even stronger case if she had explained what prof. Rolf Zinkernagel's work on latent virusinfections has shown, in my humble opinion.

For the (2006) discussion on Zinkernagel's work, see:

Agreed Frans!  But recall from the article that she also believes that these rhinoviruses are harmless as stated in the 1984 study she quotes.  As far as she knows we are merely dealing with a simple cold that the body can cope with easily.

Of course, we on the MP, who know about CWD bacteria and the microbiota, also know that there may not be such a thing as a "harmless virus or bacteria"!  And the long-term effects of these "harmless" rhinoviruses along with a lifetime of immunosuppression could very easily be an important factor decades later for someone to be diagnosed with ... say ... ALS!!!

Wow!! I haven't read the article but it is hard to believe that this woman is quoting a study done in 1984! That's almost 30 years ago. Unbelievable.

Hey, I did some studies in 1984, and I think they are still good studies :) :)

Your point is taken Dr Marshall!!  1984 IS ancient history for medical science!

We've come a long way in those 2.5 decades.
