I heard a story on NPR that suggested that obesity is contagious......that the more obese people that you hang around....the chances of you becoming obese are higher.

The study also reports that even when you stop 'hanging out' with obese people the tendency to stay obese stays with you.

Could this be because your metagenome is altered by the company of others?

I know when I was around a very obese diabetic with cardiac morbidities, colon cancer and neuropathy.....I mean in close quarters driving for several hours....the whole right side of my body[I was the driver] erupted in numbness and burning//twitching.  This happened every time on the 200 mile trip[total six trips] and this experience got me wondering about microbiota transmission.

They don't mention in this printed version of the article that the obesity tendency doesn't go away after altering the social habits away from obese people....but the interview on NPR did.
