You may purchase Benicar from another country if it is not available in yours.

There is no substitute for Benicar. See I cannot afford Benicar. Is there an acceptable substitute?

The right kind of Benicar

There are two types of Benicar and it is CRITICAL that you have the right kind, which is just plain Benicar:

40 mg tabs have C-15 written on them
20 mg tabs have C-14 written on them

There is also a form of Benicar which includes Hydrochlorothiazide (HCT), a diuretic. You do NOT want this kind.

Check your Benicar tablets to make sure that you have the right kind.

It isn't safe to start the Marshall Protocol until you have an adequate supply of Benicar on hand and your doctor's permission to increase to 40mg every four hours if symptoms become intolerable. Please discuss this issue with him before you begin.

Sources of Benicar

Generic Benicar (olmecip or olmezest) by mail order

A generic form of olmesartan medoxomil is available which comes in tablet form and is sold by a pharmaceutical company in India. It is called olmezest or olmecip.

Some have said that the Olmecip tablets don't smell like the Sankyo formulation which is a factor for some folk. It has a different binder formulation from Sankyo's Benicar, and dissolves more quickly (a benefit for folk on the MP when using frequent dosing). It is still recommended to take the Olmecip tablets with a hot drink, however.

Ordering tips

-Make sure you order the pure Olmesartan Medoxomil, and not the tablets which have other BP lowering drugs added to the Olmesartan. Often there is a single pull-down menu of products, and you need to be careful selecting the correct one.

-Remember not to order too many tablets at once, as there is always the chance that you will hit somebody in US Customs who will sieze or delay your shipment.

-I had trouble with the mail the last time and it took over five weeks for me to get the meds (it took the company 3 weeks to get my mail--must have been lost and then found in the mail).  I discovered then that they have a policy to call to confirm receipt of funds (and I thought the customer service person was just being extra nice before).  Had I understood that I'd have known sooner that something was wrong, as it usually takes about 3 weeks for delivery.  In the future, I'm sending the funds FedEx.  They take credit cards for brand, which I believe is from Canada, but require either a Cashier's check or bank transfer for the generic made in India.  (Ain't no one getting my bank transfer information.)

Online mailorder sources

Mar 31, 2008: Members report NorthWestPharmacy is the cheapest for mailorder generic Benicar.

NorthWestPharmacy.com

This is a Canadian mail order pharmacy specializing in providing affordable medications, and they supply the Olmecip via a wholesaler in Germany. 40mg 90 pills $43.99  Shipped 49 cents each

-Same Olmecip product as always. Interesting that the cardboard box had a customs declaration printed onto it. Highly efficient, perhaps too much so. It was sent Registered Mail, which I felt sure would trigger inspection, but no signs of forced inspection. Probably just Xray. Declaration was "Health Products for Personal Use," same as with Planet Drugs. I guess it could be the same wholesaler. They phoned me (from Canada) when the package had shipped from Germany.

Also: Canadageneric

-90 tablets (40 mg) are $49.00 with free shipping! That is less than 55 cents per tablet.:cool:Took 2 weeks from date of order to receive the package shipped from the UK, made in India by Cipla Ltd.  The interesting thing is that the B.No. (D71454), manufacture date (Jun 07) and expiration date (May 09) on the packaging is the same as on my last order from Planet Drugs Direct. Requires that a prescription be mailed, faxed, or emailed to Canada Generic. ~GF.

Also: Planetdrugsdirect

-I ordered 3 boxes of 30 x 40mg tabs (for $81) from Planet Drugs Direct with a faxed prescription. Small circular white tablets branded Olmecip, Made in India by Cipla Ltd in blister packaging. The shipping box was mailed from Frankfurt, Germany by "Normal Unregistered Mail" postage paid "Prioritaire" but with no Airmail stickers, or the like.  The customs declaration on the box was stamped "Health Products for Personal Use."  It looks like it was sent on 10 Dec 2007, the same date I got the email saying it had been shipped. I had placed the order on the 6th. The declared value seems to be "85" but it is obscured. Planet Drugs is located in New Zealand. All the emails came from there and the toll-free phone number was directed there too. I guess they then sub-contracted the order. The box had been repaired by the post office, but had not been opened by Customs.

-I purchase Olmesartan in the UK which here is called Olmetec, it is indeed a white oval tablet with C15 on one side and blank on the reverse. This is an 'official brand name version' manufactured by Daiichi-Sankyo UK ltd, not a generic; I presume this is what you have received from Planet Drugs Direct... ~Stu

Also: Inhousepharmacy

-I have just found a supplier of reasonably cheap generic Benicar (Olmecip) which is made in India. The supplier is a UK company, called Inhousepharmacy, from which I have ordered goods previously. I can confirm that they are reliable. ~hip

Also Pharmawebglobal

-(a Canadian company I think). Benicar page The generic is $1.09 per tablet (bought in 100 count) and the brand is $1.49 per tablet (bought in 84 count).  The biggest concern I have is whether the drugs will get snagged by the US mail service/customs (and the money spent lost and so there would go the savings). It's possible the company will provide discounts for large purchases (I received a substantial discount the last time--$150), and so the generic price above might actually be lower.  For example, I paid just $.84 tab the last time.  (I should note that I was not offered this substantial savings the first time; it may be that one has to become a repeat buyer.) ~eClaire

Efficacy of generic Benicar

-Have been using the generic from India for over two months now, and it is still doing the job.  I've used both the 20mg (which was yellow) when the 40mg tabs were not available, and I am now using the 40mg tabs.  ~eClaire

-Alternating 40mg olmecip tablets with 40mg Benicar.  No difference noticed in the reactions between the two. ~Grey Fox

AUSTRALIA

Benicar®Available PBS script for Olmetec x 120 tablets (is 4 boxes x 30 tabs) x 6 repeats.
Information for you and your Dr.

NDodd wrote: >>>>>>

Olmesartan is an unrestricted benefit on the PBS, ie its cost is subsided by the Australian Government, and its use is not restricted to a particular condition.  As you know, the price of PBS scripts is capped at around $30 and around $4.95 for concession card holders.   Unrestricted benefit means that you do not have to have hypertension to qualify for the PBS subsidy.

There is not much point getting a PBS script for 30 tabs for $30, cos this is pretty close to the private price.  However an Authority script can get you 120 tabs for $30.  Or if you are on 5 tabs/day, your doc can prescribe you 150 tabs per month.

This means that you can ask your doctor for an 'Authority script' for one months supply, with six repeats.  The cost will be the same as for one pack of 30 tabs.

I just checked with the Authority approvals people by phone to confirm this. It is not necessary for you to have hypertension. There is currently no PBS restriction to hypertension.

I might put immunopathology and hypertension where someone has both conditions.

I might also put hypervitaminosis D where someone has high 1,25D.

I put a PBS Authority script for 120 tabs and 5 repeats through the phone approval just now using the indication of 'immunopathology'.

I believe the intention of the Authority system is also to allow a levelling of the cost for patients on larger than normal doses.  I use the Authority approval system for any script when the patient is on more than one pack per month , eg eczema creams, antidepressants, antipsychotics, diabetic medication, herpes prevention, and even sorbolene (five tubs per month!).

Further Information:

On page 2 of the Benicar insert says, "Olmesartan shows linear pharmacokinetics following single oral doses of up to 320 mg and multiple oral doses of up to 80 mg." Which means that there is no further increase in the decrease of blood pressure with higher amounts than RDA.  And that it has been tested safe to 320 mg per day... twice the maximum taken with the MP protocol.

The palliative effects come into play, which are not written up on that insert making Benicar  safer on the amount used with the MP protocol than with less.

information on Benicar called "FDA Safety Insert", most important pages are Pages 4, 5, 9 & 10 - pages 4 & 5 show that blood pressure is not reduced further with increased dosing, and pages 9-10 say that dosage must be individualised, and high doses are well tolerated.

It isn't safe to start the Marshall Protocol until you have an adequate supply of Benicar on hand and your doctor's permission to increase to 40mg every four hours if symptoms become intolerable. Please discuss this issue with your Dr before you begin.

CANADA

Benicar is called Olmesartan in Canada.  This pharmacy is in Quebec but can fill prsecritpions for all Canadians.  Here is the contact info:

It is a good idea to get a six-month prescription (rx) from your doctor. You will need to fax Yetvart the rx, your credit card number and mailing address. You can request him to fill the first month's supply ($125 plus ~$15 shipping Xpress Post). Then you mail him the original rx and request that he fill each month's supply by email (i.e. send him an email each month). They come very quickly (within the week) I always keep a month's supply in hand even as I am ordering my next batch.

If your doctor does not specify, Yetvart will fill the prescription with the timed-release (TR) form of olmesartan which seems to work fine. However, you may want to have your doctor request some non-TR pills as well, in case you need extra olmesartan to deal with responses to light and immunopathology. ~Ruth Goold

Both time release and regular Benicar is available. See FAQ re recommendation to order some of each.

http://www.canada.ca (mentioned by a Canadian member who said that they drop ship it from Germany)

-I used North Drugmart http://www.northdrugmart.com  a Canadian online pharmacy, to order Olmecip, with good results. They seem to know the order limits to keep Customs from tearing into stuff (3 months supply max), and shipping from India to UK, canada to me took about 2 weeks.

Important for anyone using them online is to call them by phone once you place the order (requires fax prescription). They do this to confirm everything, and will not process the order without it. I wasted 2 days because this wasn't pointed out. But they are freindly and knowlegable.

Cost was initially $402 for 360 40mg tabs, but ended up being a little lower because they figured in the exact exchange rate! Your credit card will be charged as Westlake Pharmacies. I was paying $310 for 120 tabs at a local discount pharmacy, so this is WAY better. The Olmecip seems to be slightly better on my stomach and absorbs faster - maybe a different coating?  Havent had to chew one yet, so I cant speak to the taste. ~CaptBubba Oct08

NEW ZEALAND

-I finally got Olmesartan through customs – unfortunately, one of my orders got lost in the post so that was $700 that I had to chalk up to experience.

For those of you importing Olmesartan (Benicar or Votum) privately  into NZ, you need to know that customs will return the package to sender without informing you if you have ordered more than three-months supply @ 40 mg per day.

There are three options to get around this:

-Get your GP to import the medication for you (best option – as there are no restrictions for doctors)

-Order only 98-tablets per time

-Talk to MedSafe and get them to approve you as an importer – you will need to provide heaps of documentation from your GP for this one.

FINLAND

-Olmetec available in Finland. I started using it Dec 2003. As a BP medicine we pay about 60 Euros per 98x40 mg. ~risto

Financial help

This website has a 27 page handbook, "2003-2004 Directory of Prescription Drug Patient Assistance Programs", which can be downloaded for free via the internet. It gives contact info on all of the drug manufacturers so that needy patients can learn about how to obtain free Rx meds. To download the handbook, look down on the bottom of the right side of the home page. The heading is in small bold print, but the words "click here" are in very small, light print -- just so you don't overlook it. You can also do a search by each state to find out if there is any special information pertaining to programs in your state.

RxHope provides free drugs (Benicar is on their list) to those who qualify. You go through your doctor, who fills out the form for you - Be sure to check all the requirements, and the meds are sent to Docs office where you pick them up. Patients must reside in the United States and have a U.S. treating physician.

Note: The Federal Trade Commission is warning consumers to ignore Internet solicitations that charge a fee (up to $195) for information on free or low-cost prescription drug programs. Many prescription drug companies are willing to assist people who lack prescription drug coverage, can't afford to pay for medication out-of-pocket, or have exhausted their insurance's annual allowance. However, the programs have strict qualification standards and can be located without charge
on the Helping Patients Web site.
http://www.helpingpatients.org

If, however, you do not feel well enough to track down the details to qualify for each of these medications yourself, you may want to consider using this program which has received excellent reviews in major/reputable press. They charge a nominal fee of $10 per medication to prepare the paperwork to provide to your doctor to submit to the pharmaceutical company.

Sankyo Pharma has a patient assistance program called Open Care Program (sometimes called Needy Meds). Sankyo Pharma Open Care is the main source of assistance for low-income people residing in the US and with a US-treating physician to obtain Benicar. If you have Adobe Acrobat, you can download an application from that link. There are also guidelines for the program and overall instructions.

Members experiences with the Sankyo's Open Care program

I spoke with a supervisor, Karen today, and was told my expected Benicar prescription was returned to my doctor because I sent it too early! My prescription for the last quarter was delayed several weeks partly because I forgot to ask my doctor to send the script at the proper time, then that one was rejected because I failed to send a new application and tax return, (which is required on an annual basis).

By the way, do not wait for them to ask for the annual re-application, they are way too busy with all the other paper shuffling they do to expect them to do it. They are also way too busy to actually hold your request, should you attempt to send it before 45 days has expired since you recd your last shipment........but they have lots of time to mail it back to your doc (apparently not, according to my docs office) Apparently I could have sent re-submitted the request a week or two ago, but since I didn't, and they apparently tossed the early one, I lose that time until they receive another script and app from my doctor by mail.

So, by the previous year's timetable, I submitted my script early enough to receive the package on Sept 1. I waited till now to follow up, and Karen informed me that since I was tardy submitting my tax return, (they only tell you that when you wonder why you didn't get the last package on time) the clock starts ticking again, once I finally received the belated package of Benicar, which was only one month's worth for three months (new policy).

Lesson to learn........don't expect them to track anything for you, you must submit your script request no sooner than 45 after your last shipment, and if you are late, too bad, you miss out on those days, and you have to wait the required 45 days before you dare make your next request. Also remember to submit your income info and a new application every year. I don't know for sure but if you accidentally send it a day or two early, they might just reject it and send it back to your doc!

Note: I had been receiving 4 x 40mg Benicar per day, after jumping through many hoops a year ago. The last quarter, they (without any notice) limited my dose to one Benicar per day. ~John Dresser

Help purchasing antibiotics

Other programs may provide the antibiotics, through the drug companies that make them or through state assistance or through low-income clinics. One place you can check for help is this site about patient assistance programs.

Medicare prescription program

See this thread for information on how to get Benicar and other MP meds covered through Medicare.

Prescription Hope

Prescription Hope http://www.prescriptionhope.com/ is a charity that will supply meds for the financially distressed.

To qualify, one must have an income under $21,800. as a single and $31,000. as a couple. There MIGHT be some consideration if one was not too far over and had kids, or another chronically ill person in the family, etc. Thanks to a couple of wonderful ladies in Iowa and Minnesota, they had the MP meds included in a Lyme Disease meds list they created. It takes a bit of time to get the patient on stream. However, once in the system, one gets their prescriptions sent directly to them for $7.00/script/per month (yes the decimal is in the right place). Meds can be added or changed once in the system without delays. ~Mr Bill Oct08

Canadageneric is now asking how many Benicar a person is taking each day. If your prescription gets denied, please let us know what the magic maximum number might be :) Two a day seems to be an answer they like:)
