I saw my doctor yesterday, and he is now prescribing Benicar/Olmesartan on an Authority PBS script!
Still doesn't look like I will get anything back from HCF for my other scripts, but I am VERY happy to now be getting Olmesartan on PBS!

Hi Shadowfeet,
Somewhere on this thread (I haven't been able to find it back yet) Claudia explains how she received some refund from HCF. I don't know if they have changed their policy since then, but it's worth a shot. Let us know how you go, I'll have another look for the post. Congrats on the authority script.

Thank you for all that info, that is super helpful for patients to take to their GP. What I don't understand is why would a GP still be reluctant to prescribe the required dose if the use is unrestricted and the authority people say you don't need to have hypertension? Where is the scary part in getting an authority script for the right amount? // Olmesartan is an unrestricted benefit on the PBS, ie its cost is subsided by the Australian Government, and its use is not restricted to a particular condition. // I believe the intention of the Authority system is also to allow a levelling of the cost for patients on larger than normal doses. // //I just checked with the Authority approvals people by phone to confirm this. It is not necessary for you to have hypertension//. My question may seem superfluous after all this info, yet my (very kind and helpful) GP is still reluctant to get an authority script for the necessary dosage (120/150 month) eventhough he can see it is clearly working for us and without it both my daughter and I got little hope, if any to get on top of it all.
Thanks all
Amelia

I FINALLY got it from my doctor. I have three packets in my cupboard (and minocycline) with 5 repeats ready to start Phase 1. I just have to get my vitamin Ds tested. I have been waiting to be able to afford this stuff for three years now. It was out of my reach to import it.
It cost me nothing because I have reached my PBS safety net limit.
My doctor had no bother with getting the authority.

I am still questioning the availability of Olmetec on PBS.
The Australian Prescriber Volume 30/Number 3 of June 2007 states that Olmesartan medoxomil (Olmetec - Schering Plough) has an Approved Indication for hypertension.
I am delighted that people are accessing this drug for the low cost but I wonder how things will be in 12 months time? Perhaps if things change, you will know why.

Hi,
my last lot of olmesarten cost me around $30 for a months supply from my local pharmacy. We can get an authority script from the GP which can be used at any pharmacy, the GP can prescibe however many tablets you need for the month, mine being 4 boxes.
regards,
Sue

| i rang the authority saction of pbs of medicare australia, and they said olmetec can be prescribed for any condition and at any dose or frequency the dr pleases. my dr rang and says can only do 5 repeats. this means one would have to get a 5 repeat script every month.we have come a long way since i did all the mp over the last 26 months.for the first15 months i was paying 700$ per quarter, from germany, and the last10 months 360$ per quarter from compoundia. now it is 75$ per quarter on pbs. good news.

I'm not sure where to post this but thought this would be a good spot.
I am a new zealander and I'm going to aussie for weeks vacation on the 20th of june. Importing benicar into NZ is really tough so I was thinking of just buying some in australia and bringing it back with me. How would I go about doing this?
Thanks

G'day headsuppoka,
I assume you would need to see an Australian Dr to get a prescription and then you could puchase via a pharmacy or compounding chemist (such as Compoundia). My understanding is that Australian pharmacies are not able to fill scripts written by NZ Drs.
I also believe that there are some negotiations happening for bulk Olmestartan to be supplied to a NZ compounding pharmacy. I am not sure where these negotations are up to or what the complications/difficulties are.

thanks for the quick reply.
I hope that the negotiations work out (do you have any idea of the time frame for this?) as it is proving incredibly difficult to
1) find a source that will ship benicar into NZ
2) get benicar in through customs.

Hi Headsuppoka,
When you are in Australia, you should be able to buy olmetec / benicar on a private prescription at just about any chemist. Although it won't be cheap. I've got no idea how much you could buy and try taking back eg 120 tab for 1 month ? or 3 months supply?
You just might be able to get it on the PBS eg for one box per month ? , i e not an authorise PBS script.

I don't know how it will work for you when you travel back, but if you have a copy of the script and a travel letter from doctor with list of medications it should help
Let us know, how you go with it........Grace

Re Availabiliity of Olmesartan in New Zealand
1 To get olmesartan when you are over in Australia on a trip you will need an Australian doctor's prescription, not a prescription you bring over from NZ
2 As to getting olmesartan on our PBS - this is only available to Australian residents with an Australian Medicare card and number.
3 However you can buy olmesartan here on a non PBS scrip - providing of course the scrip is written by an Australian registered doctor. The non PBS price is about AUD 0.90 per 40 mg tablet or capsule.
4 As to being able to take the olmesartan back to New Zealand with you, you would need to check locally in NZ as to what are the local NZ import rules for personal use. In Australia for example we can bring into Australia only three months supply of only those prescription drugs which are not commercially available in Australia.
5 As to local avaiability of olmesartan in NZ, about two weeks ago I ( on behalf of the AAF) asked one of the Australian olmesartan wholesale importers to look into the possibility of them supplying one of the Auckland compounding pharmacies.
I have no idea as to the NZ regulatory hurdles that have to be gone through to get this channel working. There was a plan in 2004 to harmonise drug registration between Australian and NZ, under which any drug registered for use in Australia was automatically deemed to be registered for use in NZ ( and vice versa) - but this plan was aborted only months before the intended start date of July 2007.
Later this month I shall be following up with our contacts who are looking into the possibility of bulk importation of olmesartan into NZ - and a possibility is all it is at the moment.

Hi Headsuppoka,
If you are able to get a private prescription written by an Australian doctor, the best price for Olmesartan is probably at Chemist Warehouse (around $25 for 40mg x 30 tablets). There is a list of their store locations here: http://www.epharmacy.com.au/aboutus/storelocations.asp
Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies, very helpful indeed.
I am able to bring with me a 3month supply into NZ. I will try to find a doctor in aus who will be willing to write the rx. I have a doctor in NZ who is monitoring me so I dont think it should be all that difficult to get ab rx if I explain the situation.
If anyone has a good MP doctor who would consider doing this please send me a PM.
Thanks

Hi Headsuppoka
If you do go to AUZ to get some Olmesartan, you will be coming back through NZ customs with a significant quantity...enough to give them a severe sense of humour failure!
Make sure that you are armed with phone numbers, letters and prescriptions from your NZ doctor, otherwise it will be confiscated and you will be in trouble.
Cheers
Guss

Hi Headsuppoka,
When I went back to NZ for holidays at the end of 2007, I also took a photocopy of "Issue 7, Fall 2004: A new protocol for autoimmune illnesses, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and lyme disease:combating cell wall deficient bacteria and excessive inflammation (Marshall Protocol)", Waterhouse, J.C. - you'll find it on the MP website.
+ copies of phase 2 info and other stuff.
what with all the benicar for 6 weeks, paracetamol, panadeine, etcetcetc I truely thought that my bags would be gone over - but didn't happen either way!!!
Good luck, and I hope that NZ gets it soon. I have a sister over there who has looked into the MP for herself and my neice, but couldn't do it due to the lack of benicar.
