I've been on the MP about three months now...extremely grateful that my MD discovered it.  My D test was taken before I began avoiding light -- both measurements in the low 30's, and my MD was not convinced that the blood was frozen, so I have not included those results.  When I visited the lab for the test, I didn't know at the time that the blood had to be frozen, or I would have reminded them.

Herxing most intense usually on the second day after taking abx.  It's bothersome but not unbearable.  Symptoms typically include some combination of the following, at one time or another: severe fatigue/sedation/muscle weakness, ringing in the ears, depression, irritability, brain fog, severe short-term memory problems, anxiety, jaw pain, neck and shoulder stiffness, warmth in the face and neck but temp not above normal.  I notice a bit of dizziness (occasionally severe) most of the time (herxing or not) when I stand from being seated or lying down.  I also notice that I sweat very easily all of the time, and my palms are always sweaty.  I frequently become very warm at night in bed after taking my last Benicar dose of the day.

During the past few weeks, I have also had periods of feeling better for perhaps several hours:  time during which my head is clear, no fatigue, movement more fluid...times when I just instinctively know I am getting better.  I had said for years that with this illness I always felt like I was walking around covered in a blanket of chains.  I feel the beginnings of relief from that....like seeing the first dim wash of light in the sky above the horizon before dawn, knowing that a new day is just beginning.

Boosted mino dose to 75mg Friday, per my MD.  Herxing has been erratic...very bad for a few hours, maybe, not long after taking abx...then it lets up for a few hours, then bad again.  Experience weak appetite, sore/swollen throat, dizziness, postnasal drip most all of the time, herx or not.  Herx at its worst includes severe weakness and fatigue, neck and shoulder pain...and what feels like a nerve pain in each upper leg and upper arm when I lie on my side.

I agree with Dogster in wanting to just be knocked out for the duration and fed by IV!  Quality of life right now isn't much to be missed!

Hi JT

This is Suzanne- I really enjoyed reading your first post with the poetic description of a glimmer of wellness peeking through. I have also experienced the same feelings in between the symptoms, after being on the full MP for only 6 weeks.

I am in the process of ramping up the mino to 50 mg and have very similar symptoms to the ones you have described in your post - they also come and go - I can feel really bad for a few hours after I take the dose and usually feel worst at either end of the day- through the day there is a definite patern of waxing and waning. My worst symptoms are headaches and nausea. I also get the very annoying symptons of leg and arm pain and tingling/ numbness- with neck pain and stiffnes. I too have had CFS for about 4 years. Having said all this, these symptoms are all overlaid on an underlying feeling of increased wellness, a better sleep pattern and more energy. It already seems worth sticking to the program even with the inconvenience of the symptoms- and it is great to hear of other peoples experiences. Thanks for your post. I hope you are continuing to do well.

regards, Suzanne

Since I increased my mino dose to 75mg about a week ago, my herx was a little more intense (not unexpected), but by the third of those doses on Tuesday, that stronger herx included severe irritability...much worse than I'd experienced before.  Following tips on what to do if herx becomes intolerable, I took the forth dose 60 hours after the previous one and took only 50 mg.  That was yesterday, and the irritability is gone today.  For the next dose, I will go back up to 75mg.

Thanks for all the great tips.  They really work.

Having recently increased my mino to 75mg and experiencing some herxing that became intolerable (extreme irritability), I dropped the next dose to 50....then back to 75 the day before yesterday.  The herxing is tolerable after this 75mg dose, but still includes screaming tinnitus, sensitivity/irritibility to noise, very sore throat this morning, weakness, disturbed sleep (difficult for me to get comfortable in bed...pain in arms and legs, sort of an annoying ache or buzz sometimes, that feels like it's just under my skin); also wake up very hot an hour or two after my before-bed Benicar dose.  Dogster mentioned in a recent post of having a strong appetite....I have the opposite!  My appetite is weak recently.

Maybe it's the recent increasing of the mino, but I haven't experienced any sort of relief during the past week or so....the type of relief I had written of earlier above.  I am sure it will return.

My strength is low, but my hope is high.

Thank you for posting.. The aim is to achieve tolerable herxing (physical, mental, and emotional) by adjustment of meds dosing and schedule while diligently avoiding Light and vitamin D..

see the FAQ for precautions and options to help you achieve tolerable herxing My Herxheimer reaction is too strong. What should I do?

let us know if you have any questions.. all best, Barb ...

I've had an uncomfortable week, and haven't been able to compose a posting as often as I would like to have.  Symptoms:
  • ringing and pressure in ears, hypersensitive to sound
  • high emotional sensitivity/fragile emotions
  • oily face and hands
  • random skin itching
  • sore throat, raspy voice
  • weakness (very difficult to get up and down stairs at times)
  • intermittent brain fog
  • difficulty falling asleep, awaken a few times during the night)
  • nerve and muscle pain in arms and legs (worst in upper arms, especially if I am lying on one side or the other)
Pressure in ears and hypersensitivity to sound subsided yesterday, but some other symptoms remain at a level that's just at --but sometimes just over -- the tolerability threshhold.  Today I increased my Benicar dosing to Q4H and delayed taking my next 75mg dose of Mino, which was due today.  I may divide it up and take less more often, per the guidelines for intolerable herx.

I think I'm back on track now after a rough week or so.  Yesterday, I resumed mino, but took only 50mg, even though I had been at the 75mg level.  Today, I dropped the Benicar dose back down to Q6H from Q4H, and I feel OK today...back to my tolerable "core" herx symptoms: weakness, muscle fatigue, sore swollen throat, intermittent brain fog.

Herx symptoms that I've had over the past few days have been tolerable:  fatigue/sleepiness/sedation, sore/swollen throat, raspy voice, postnasal drip, oily face and hands, tinnitus, erratic appetite.  Nerve pain experienced earlier this month has subsided considerably, sleep has been better the past few nights (fall asleep and stay asleep better).

I am serving as a juror on a civil trial this week, something I was a bit apprehensive about doing, but the days are not long, we have frequent breaks, and the case being tried is very interesting.  I feel my brain fog has eased up this week as indicated by my ability to follow the proceedings.  (I'm taking copious notes, though, in case I don't remember much!)  Emotional herx symptoms described in earlier posts which were most troubling of all earlier in the month, have also eased up.

Herx symptoms yesterday and today have been steady, with a slight increase today, the "second day."  I am due for another mino dose later this afternoon.  Symptoms have included: weakness/sleepiness, tinnitus, sore throat/raspy voice, random itches, oily face and hands, erratic appetite.  It's been easier to get to sleep and stay asleep over the past few days, but I still awaken very sedated.  "Second day" symptoms have also included a buzz just under the skin and increased fatigue/sleepiness, all tolerable.

Herxing continues steadily (but mostly bearable), with slight variations during the course of a day. Symptoms:
  • awakening with stiff muscles and joints, very groggy (totally unrefreshed, which has been one of my symptoms for many years)
  • sore throat, raspy voice (speaking is a strain), sneezing, runny nose, slight cough (like symptoms of a mild head cold)
  • severe fatigue/weakness
  • tinnitus and pressure in ears sometimes
  • brain fog of varying intensity
  • oily face and hands
  • random itching

I am continuing to take 75mg of mino Q48H, and I think my herxing has become fairly consistent from one day to the next at a level that's certainly still noticeable but not intolerable.  It never stops.  Major symptoms continue to be those listed in post above.  I am probably just about ready to move up to 100mg, and will probably do so after seeing my doctor on Wednesday of this week.

As noted above, my herx symptoms have been fairly consistent and tolerable during the past two weeks or so, so I increased my mino dose yesterday to 100 mg q48h at my doctor's direction.  I did so with a bit of trepidation, however, since I had a rough time of it after about the third 75mg dose after the increase from 50 mg.  I will just make the necessary adjustments in dosing again this time, if necessary.

as per the FAQ... If you need herx relief Benicar at Q4H is a good place to start, and if the herx goes towards intolerable, the more frequent mino .. let us know if you have any questions..

all best, Barb ...

Benicar 40mg Q6H; Minocycline 100 mg, dose 2

General symptoms over the past few days: severe fatigue (body felt very heavy), brain fog, stiff finger joints (left hand moreso than right), fragmented sleep, tinnitus, sore throat, runny nose, slight cough, postnasal drip, oily face and hands, random itching.  Intensity varies from time to time, but all has been tolerable overall.

I took my second 100 mg dose of mino this morning.  Earlier this afternoon, the most disabling symptoms eased up enough for me to go out for a brief shopping trip.

Benicar 40mg Q6H; Minocycline 100 mg, dose 3

This morning, I took my third 100 mg dose of mino.  My most disabling herx symptoms have remained at bay for the past two days, for some reason.  I still have light head cold symptoms, a bit of nerve pain in my legs at times, and periods of moderate brain fog, but that's about it. (All of that is no worse than I felt before I started the MP.)  Yesterday afternoon, I was even able to do some light yoga for a while, which I need badly.  In general, over the past several months (even before starting the MP), it seems that the more sendentary I am, the worse I feel.  If I'm feeling well enough to do it, movement helps me feel better, at least a little.

Benicar 40mg Q6H; Minocycline 100 mg, dose 4

Symptoms during the past few days have been tolerable.  At times, they're no worse than the symptoms of my illness before I started the MP.  Symptoms yesterday and today have varied in intensity and included:
  • mild head cold symptoms
  • variable brain fog - moderate to severe
  • tinnitus
  • oily face, hands, and scalp
  • random itching
  • difficulty getting warm (and the weather's not cold!)
  • achiness, including my lungs
  • breathing a bit labored
  • very weak and sedated (needed a nap after 11:00 a.m. Benicar dose)
  • nerve pain in legs when lying on my side for long period
  • bit of difficulty falling asleep at night, even though I feel sleepy and ready for bed

Benicar 40mg Q6H; Minocycline 100 mg Q48H, dose 6

Symptoms experienced over the past few days have continued very much like that posted above, all tolerable and fairly steady.  The most prominent symptom is just severe fatigue, such that even breathing is an effort at times.  I thought I'd experience periods of intolerable herxing since raising my mino dose to 100 mg, but it hasn't happened yet. I'm especially relieved that I've avoided (so far) an encore of the intense emotional herx that I experienced a little over a month ago. At this rate, phase 2 can't be far off!
