I am not sure if this topic merits a new thread...MP staff, feel free to relocate or delete if appropriate (will not hurt my feelings!).

This study explores some of the benefits of what the authors refer to as "activated" vitamin D, in other words, 1,25D hormone, on cardiovascular health. They also make reference to 1,25D analogs. It raises some interesting questions when examined from the MP perspective.

Sadly, they go on to muddy an otherwise interesting study by jumping on the 'vitamin" D promotion bandwagon and occasionally blurring the important functional distinctions between the different forms of "vitamin" D. Perhaps this is a prerequisite for publication these days.

Still, an interesting study, since seen from the MP perspective it reinforces the MP viewpoint concerning the importance of "D"metabolism and probably VDR functionality in cardiovascular health. It would have been nice to see some discussion of why artificially increasing 1,25D leads to better outcomes (albeit with side effects) and why "vitamin" D metabolic pathways are compromised to begin with, including some indication of the role of infection on "D" metabolism and the importance of antimicrobial peptides. Of course, those of us on the MP are already thinking in these terms, but I am always concerned about the general public, many out there with Th1 illnesses, who are constantly being fed an oversimplified view of the role and health benefits of "vitamin" D.

Anyway, here is the science daily news release version...

I think if I was a genetically engineered rat, on a high salt diet, with heart problems I would be very excited about Dr. Robert U. Simpson's ground breaking research.

Did you know that Simpson’s team has revealed precisely how activated vitamin D connects with specific vitamin D receptors and produces its calming, protective effects.

Migsies,
This would be an excellent topic for our new MP-Lifestyles discussion area. That would allow a much wider discussion of the issues than I really want here in this 'Perspectives', where we try to keep the focus on emerging technologies, which this particular study is hardly likely to ever become :):)

Would you mind reposting it over on the new site?

Will do...I appreciate the need to shift focus on the "Perspectives" site to more technical matters and thus reduce the "clutter".:)
