I have told many of you of the breaks I was given (as a 'youngster') while teaching in Western Australia, and then while transitioning from engineering to biomedicine.

My head of department when I was teaching at University of Western Australia has just written a book, which he has made freely available in words and audio-tape on the web.

Yianni (and his wife) have had a big impact on my life, both back in the 1970s, and recently, when I was appointed to the adjunct professorship at Murdoch. Finally, just last week, he helped me tie together the final threads on a key collaboration between West China Hospital, Autoimmunity Research Foundation and Murdoch University (the details of which which will be publicly announced soon).

I figured that some of you might be interested in what drives people to help others so selflessly, and so I offered to post the links to his book here.

The website he has created is at: http://www.divinepharos.org/

The PDF files can be downloaded chapter by chapter, or all at once from:

http://www.divinepharos.org/book1.html

and the MP3 files of the audiobook are available from the same address.

I am sure Yianni would be very interested to receive emails of your thoughts/criticisms/comments etc at: editor@divinepharos.org

I obviously don't want this MP study-site to get off topic, which is learning about how the MP can help Th1 patients recover their lives, but from time to time we need to reflect on how we got to this point :):):) Directed discussion is welcome :):):)

----------------------------------------

21 Sept 2009 - Second book now available

Here is the info Yianni sent me about his new book. He was surprised (and delighted) by the response you gave to his first book.
The second book of spiritual teachings translated from original transcripts of special communications delivered and written in Greek, continues I hope, to stimulate and provide us with some insight into the answers to these and no doubt many other questions.

     How can I find Faith?
Do we need pain to understand Love?
Is logic the key to Truth?
     Is earthly Justice just?
Is symbolism an ethical or non-ethical representation of an idea?

For this book I have selected five topics from the wide range of teachings communicated to us. Why these in particular you may ask.

It is my understanding that Faith, Love, Truth and Justice are the cornerstoneof those lessons that we need to comprehend fully before we depart this earth for the last time and, The Cross as a symbol throughout the ages, is a fascinating representation of much of what is talked and written about.

I'll be pleased to answer any questions and reply to queries at
editor@divinepharos.org.

:) :) ps: Thanks for helping Amy and Paul when they were in Perth last month, Yianni :) :)

Dr. Marshall,

Thank you for sharing this, I find it highly relevant. Some of us have not a choice but to look for meaning in all of what we have experienced. Suffering seems to be the catalyst for the search for soul/spirit/God and however that is interpreted by the individual

Science relies on critical reasoning.
No amount of belief creates a fact…ever.
In the spirit of balance, I offer an opportunity to investigate an alternative point of view:

Thank you Trevor for helping me recover from this debilitating disease(s). I am now able to enjoy this life in ways that I once didn’t believe possible.

After nearly 6-years on the MP, I am taking a break. Life is good…very good.

Cheers
Guss

Yes, indeed, Guss. Civilization advances upon communication, and a desire to understand all points of view.

The BBC series on disbelief (a Brief History of Disbelief)was briefly carried on PBS here in the USA, preceded by warnings that what was contained in the program may not be suitable for children, or adults. Quite sad. We should not be warned to fear the ideas and concepts of others, especially those accepted as intellectuals in civilizations other than our own... :) :)

In the spirit of balance,

Of course Science relies on critical reasoning.
And every two year-old is interested only in facts, a natural scientist.

Unfortunately a lot of cultural practice mimes (if that is the word I want) into their cute little heads and muddles most of them up.

It is not only cultures of the societies which are fighting against the dizzying rate of change in 'the West'.
Look at the cultural practise of advertising. I have saved myself a lot of confusion, not to mention $$ by assuming that everything I see on commercial TV is untrue until proved otherwise.

BUT when I was a young freshman student, I remember the student activists coming round and trying to persuade us that there were only 2 valid viewpoints:

1) churchgoing
or
3) atheist. The assumption being 'you are rational so you must be atheist'.

the best I have ever been able to do in that direction was 2) Agnostic. Having been partly brought up in the dedicated school of a long standing branch of a well known religious system, I did know quite a lot about religious theory and practise in that culture and a little about other religious groupings and subgroups as well.

This gave me a good reason to disbelieve and disregard 'fundamentalists' of all colours. For a start, my science training made it obvious that such people mostly do not read their own holy books with any degree of attention or understanding

I wish I could remember who said
"What you tell yourself and believe is then true for you and you act accordingly"
[ any pointers to that quote would be much appreciated]

I am pretty sure that for whatever reason, some people really want to believe there is no important, significant, transcendant or immanent reality.
They tell others there is none because they can then tell it to themselves.

No amount of belief creates a fact…everI have trouble with this statement ....

seems to me a great deal of energetic opposing beliefs in rather idiosyncratic ideas has produced the fact of war in Palestine. A rather nasty fact which is destroying what could be one of the world's most significant centres of leadership in material things. Ironic, is it not:(

PS what spirit of balance, militant atheists do not believe in spirit
although I have to agree with Stengler that "Nowhere is it necessary to introduce God or the supernatural to understand the world." :P

Sallie Q,

I read a book this past year called "The Two Faces of Islam - The House of Sa'ud From Tradition to Terror" by Stephen Schwartz. It was a beautiful, fascinating read.

The narrative takes you into history and back to today in such a relational way. You come out loving the author's heart for people and his passion to understand both the facts and beliefs of this potent force in the world.

Quote from the jacket: "Many insist that Islam is a religion of peace. Others say that Islam has always harbored intolerant and violent tendencies. Now, more than ever, as Americans try to determine who our potential friends and allies are within the Muslim world, we need to understand the complex history of Islam and the varieties of Islamic belief.

From the process of embracing this history as written by Schwartz, I came to deeply identify with the mystics in sufism, such as Rabiya al-Adawiyya, and the benevolence of particular leaders who allowed an open dialog with Jews and Christians, such as Abd al-Rahman in Spain (~749 BC).

We have so much more in common than we have in difference.
And who was it that said to love our neighbor as ourselves anyway? :)
