Last Monday I flew to New York so I could attend a meeting of University of Western Australia alumni at the Harvard Club, in Manhattan.
Guest of honor was the 2006 Nobel Laureate in Medicine, Professor Barry Marshall, and his amazing wife, Adrienne.

I had the opportunity to chat with Barry and Adrienne (about our work here) in some detail.
Adrienne told me that Barry has published a book "Helicobacter Pioneers." He has asked all the groups who published about bacteria in stomach ulcers to write a chapter along the theme "how I discovered bacteria in ulcers before Barry Marshall." Which I think is an amazingly magnanimous gesture.
Then I realized that this is the primary difference between our work (and apparently Barry's) and so much academic research these days - no research secrecy - no empire building.
Of interest is that his landmark 1984 paper, which has been one of the most cited papers ever, drew the link between H.pylori and ulcers with a cohort of only 13 patients.
Barry's research interest is now focusing on how Helicobacter pylori seems to be the cause of stomach cancers, as well as stomach ulcers

Was Dr Barry Marshall aware of your work prior to your meeting him? Is he sympathetic to and intrigued by your findings?

I had written to Barry back in 2003, and he remembered those emails. Which is quite amazing, when you think about it...
Barry had no quibbles with what I was reporting about our work, I suspect he has been thinking along similar lines himself, from time to time.

| Would be nice if someone with his clout and reputation would help spread the word...
