Belinda has disseminated a Press release today, about our BioEssays paper. Please make sure the health editor for your local newspaper understands the importance of this work, as the Vitamin D lobby has been putting out its own PR, IMO intended to point out how much more qualified their experts are (LOL).

Our release is at:

The PDF of the Press Release is at URL:

New Research Challenges Concept of Vitamin D Deficiency

Low blood levels of vitamin D have long been associated with disease, and the assumption has been made that vitamin D supplements may protect against disease. In the light of new knowledge that hundreds of genes are dependent on vitamin D, this assumption needs to be reconsidered.

In a report published in the current issue of the journal BioEssays(1), Trevor Marshall, Ph.D., professor at Australia’s Murdoch University School of Biological Medicine and Biotechnology, explains  how increased vitamin D intake affects much more than just nutrition or bone health. The paper explains how the Vitamin D Nuclear Receptor (VDR) acts in the repression or transcription of hundreds of genes, including genes associated with diseases ranging from cancers to multiple sclerosis.

"The VDR is at the heart of innate immunity, being responsible for expression of most of the antimicrobial peptides, which are the body’s ultimate response to infection," Marshall said. "Molecular biology is now forcing us to re-think the idea that a low measured value of vitamin D means we simply must add more to our diet. Supplemental vitamin D has been used for decades, and yet the epidemics of chronic disease, such as heart disease and obesity, are just getting worse."

"Our disease model has shown us why low levels of vitamin D are observed in association with major and chronic illness," Marshall added. "Vitamin D is a secosteroid hormone, and the body regulates the production of all it needs. In fact, the use of supplements can be harmful, because they suppress the immune system so that the body cannot fight disease and infection effectively."

Marshall's research has demonstrated how ingested vitamin D can actually block VDR activation, the opposite effect to that of Sunshine. Instead of a positive effect on gene expression, Marshall reported that his own work, as well as the work of others, shows that quite nominal doses of ingested vitamin D can suppress the proper operation of the immune system. It is a different metabolite, a secosteroid hormone called 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, which activates the VDR to regulate the expression of the genes. Under conditions that exist in infection or inflammation, the body automatically regulates its production of all the vitamin D metabolites, including 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the metabolite which is usually measured to indicate vitamin D status.

Vitamin D deficiency, long interpreted as a cause of disease, is more likely the result of the disease process, and increasing intake of vitamin D often makes the disease worse. "Dysregulation of vitamin D has been observed in many chronic diseases, including many thought to be autoimmune," said J.C. Waterhouse, Ph.D., lead author of a book chapter on vitamin D and chronic disease (2). "We have found that vitamin D supplementation, even at levels many consider desirable, interferes with recovery in these patients."

"We need to discard the notion that vitamin D affects a disease state in a simple way," Marshall said. "Vitamin D affects the expression of over 1,000 genes, so we should not expect a simplistic cause and effect between vitamin D supplementation and disease. The comprehensive studies are just not showing that supplementary vitamin D makes people healthier."

Trevor Marshall is currently executive director of Autoimmunity Research, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization chartered in California. Its mission is to conduct scientific research into the cause and cure of disease, and to educate physicians and the public on science related to disease. I sent it to the local newspaper, and to Dr. Peter H. Gott, M.D., the retired doc that is now a syndicated medical writer.

His Vicks VaporRub cure for toenail fungus worked for me.  I figured if he can spread that treatment, he should be able to understand the MP.  :D

He graduated from Tulane Un School of Medicine in my hometown, New Orleans.

Wishing all wellness!!!  :)

I see I've dropped my small musings into the pond when the water is already roiling. Congratulations to Trevor and the team! I continue to be amazed by the patience, persistence and dedication that characterizes this effort to spread the word about Th1 illness and the effective treatment program that has been developed to address it.

Thank you, too, Trevor, for the good health so many of us now enjoy because of your efforts! We never dreamed life could be this good!

Thanks, Terry.
This is the best way to make sure that Journals and Newspapers take our releases seriously - they need to get the news value pointed out to them.

I just Googled "New Research Challenges Concept of Vitamin D Deficiency"

(be sure to click the link, which uses quotes to be accurate about the pages returned)

and got 61 unique hits for the Press Release from various newswires,  blogs and other pages (kind of mind-boggling that there are that many such websites -- but none of those (yet) were the well know ones or popular newspaper sites either -- might take a day or two for google to scan thru everything).

One amusing aspect is how your article can be nestled next to Advertisements touting:

Finally 5,000 IU and 50,000 IU caps Sunshine vitamin at reduced prices

But to be fair a lot of webpage ads are dynamically displayed based on keyword content of the articles.  Members should visit some of these sites -- especially ones that allow you to leave comments or ratings.  I saw one comment that, although slightly incoherent, was definitely on The More D The Better camp.

That one should be countered with some good arguments.

Congrats Trevor and the whole AutoImmunity Gang!

I just contacted our local newspaper, The Arizona Republic and faxed them the press release (their instructions for contact) and followed up with an email for tips on a story.

hi--
good news--but if i may say ..it doesn´t come across easily understandable that the others are wrong and Dr Marshall is right--people reading papers need headlines all the way through the article..
you need to raise the volume-or people won´t hear you
good luck Chris

Trevor,

Does it also make any sense to do a grass roots campaign and mail copies to docs in general (other than the ones we've all targeted that we know)? If yes, might there be reprints available to buy in bulk?

Looking forward to see the ripple rise to a tidal wave. Hope it happens sooner than later! Feels like it's been a long time coming.

I think that individual Docs generally don't have any interest in material which doesn't come to them via drug companies, or their patients. I doubt that any 'grass roots' campaign would be worthwhile.

However, there are a number of non-profits whose work is impacted by what we have done, and it would be good if 'grass roots' could start calling the attention of those organizations to the press release and the paper.

I wrote a comment to the contra coastal times which Trevor offered as an example of the D lobby's activities to push D.  I simply asked why all the research focused on 25 D and largly ignored the active hormone 1,25 D.

I have also been trying to contact Edge, a cutting edge publication of leading thinkers and scientists to recommend Trevor as a contributor to their website.  Hopefully I will hear from them soon so this important vitamin D message can be disseminated here.

Just a thought on the glacial pace of FDA acceptance.

If the FDA is fundamentally a political organization with a semi-technical mission, then the motivation of decision makers may be very different than those of biologists, clinicians, or professors.

Perhaps if the FDA were confronted with the notion that since it has been proven that Vitamin D is actually not a vitamin at all, but rather a pico-affective sterol hormone, then they are writing a new class of perscriptions. Consequently, in the light of such widely accepted understanding, the addition of "Vitamin D" to new food categories is tantamount to prescribing hormone therapy, which would portend significant liabilities and political blowback to those who made the wrong decisions. Perhaps someone needs to point out that warning labels for children and pregnant women should be included on the packaging.

Maybe a different communication approach could help people make the right decision for the public as well as themselves. It is sometimes easier to get politicians to do nothing than risk being wrong. Doing the right thing, now that really takes work.

Hope this notion may be of help. Keep up your excellent research.

Patrick

The responses to the Vitamin D discovery outpaces FDA decision making article are in the latest BioEssays issue. Anyone have a copy of the 3 responses?
