The video of the UCLA presentation is now online. The HD version is at URL http://www.vimeo.com/1270611 and a smaller version for those with slower Internet connections is at http://vimeo.com/1268542

We also have a stack of video showing the excitement generated during the poster sessions. Paul's Video montage is at:
http://vimeo.com/1293451   (thanks to Tom M for taking much of the footage:))

Amy's reflections on the Aging Conference are at:
http://bacteriality.com/2008/07/09/aging08/

---------------------------------------------------------------------

July 27-29th will mark a major milestone for the Autoimmunity Research Foundation, as those dates mark a conference at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) at which we will start to explore how our new science will affect many areas of human endeavor, in addition to curing chronic immune disease.

In a way, we already started this process when we presented at Karolinska on neurological disease. However, the emphasis to date has been on cure, and now we need to look at prevention. At what constitutes health.

The conference schedule and abstracts are now online. I am scheduled to speak at 5pm on Sunday 29th.
http://www.methuselahfoundation.org/UABBA/agenda/

The abstracts can be found at:
http://www.methuselahfoundation.org/UABBA/presenting/abstracts/marshall/
http://www.methuselahfoundation.org/UABBA/presenting/abstracts/mangin/
http://www.methuselahfoundation.org/UABBA/presenting/abstracts/proal/

ARF volunteers present at this conference will be Meg and Tom Mangin, Belinda Fenter, Amy Proal, Paul Albert, Liz and Trevor Marshall.

This conference is being held on an even more arduous schedule than Karolinska, with 12+ hour days. Thank God for the MP...

A PDF version of the abstracts can be found at:
http://AutoimmunityResearch.org/abstracts/Aging_2008_Marshall.pdf
http://AutoimmunityResearch.org/abstracts/Aging_2008_Mangin.pdf
http://AutoimmunityResearch.org/abstracts/Aging_2008_Proal.pdf

To better understand the aims of the scientists who will be at the conference, you might like to look at the Colbert Report interview of the head of the organizing Foundation, Aubrey de Grey. You can find it at this link:
http://www.comedycentral.com/videos/index.jhtml?videoId=156276

The conference is organized in two parts. There is a late-afternoon conference on Fri 27th which is free, and open to the public (which I suspect many of our LA members may want to attend), and a scientific conference on Saturday and Sunday. Info about the two can be found at:

http://www.methuselahfoundation.org/ADCI/promote/Aging2008PressRelease.html
http://www.methuselahfoundation.org/ADCI/
and
http://www.methuselahfoundation.org/UABBA/index.html

ps: Many thanks to UK MP member Nick Bowler for putting me in contact with Aubrey:) and to the generous Donors who have made it possible for us to afford to attend  these conferences:):)

pps: A reminder again for you Southern California based MP'ers. There is a free session of the conference on 27th June, which you can register for here:
http://www.methuselahfoundation.org/ADCI/
If you are coming, please post a PM or message here and let us know.

Interestingly, I was reading over the methusalah foundation's site last night when I came across their lysosens research.

Cells have a lot of reasons to break down big molecules and structures into their component parts, and a lot of ways to do so. Unfortunately, one of the main reasons to break things down is because they have been chemically modified so that they no longer work, and sometimes these chemical modifications create structures that are so weird that none of the cell's degradation machinery works on them.

This situation is very rare, but in the long run these modified chemicals add up. Ultimately the chemicals end up in the lysosome, a special vessel that contains the most powerful degradation machinery in the cell; if something can't be broken down there, it just stays there forever. This doesn't matter in cells that divide regularly, because division dilutes the junk enough that it remains at harmlessly low levels, but non-dividing cells gradually fill up with this stuff, making them dysfunctional. The heart, the back of the eye, some nerve cells (especially motor neurons) and, most of all, white blood cells trapped within the artery wall all suffer from this.

I couldn't help but ask myself the question "here are a list of symptoms associated with TH1 syndromes, could CWD bacteria be the missing causal link from their perspective?"

There seems quite a challenge at the conference for you Dr. M. Just see that at the Methuselah website they refer to the same article and promote Vitamin D supplementation

Supose some of you already saw the articles.
Wrong!

Aad,
It is not surprising that nearly every place where Th1 Chronic Inflammatory Disease and diseases of aging are discussed that a link to an article about half the story of D is told. After all is said and done, the evidence for low 25D will confound the very folks who have worked so hard to find that detail in Chronic Inflammatory Disease (right data for the wrong reason still is producing profoundly correct initial data about low 25D ;) ).

Also, one of the two financial program outcomes Methuselah offers is focused on murine models. So I would expect some clarification on how human VDR differ from all animal models, and why in-silico data can help inform again, for a fuller perspective.

It will be good to have those from the Autoimmunity Research Foundation there to tell, who know the relevant information and can clear up misinformation.

Best to all--Janet

Jacks and I have registered to come for Friday, as well as attend the dinner.  I do hope more LAers/MPers are coming and that we can all meet up at some point. I know it will be hectic, but maybe sitting together at dinner or something like that would be doable?

Thanks! Alayne

Alayne,
I would prefer if we could be sitting at as many tables as possible during the symposium dinner, so we can let the delegates know what we have found. I have recorded a rehearsal of the presentation I will be giving, so that any one of us who can attend the conference will understand what the message is which we need to convey to this group (check your PM, I just sent you the URL for the preview)

Maybe we can get together for an 'MP reunion' on Thursday evening?

Well, Trevor, that makes a lot more sense. Great idea for folks getting together Thursday night.  That would be great!  Thanks for the link as well - gives me a better overview of what to talk about.

I do hope folks write in if they're coming. That way we can arrange a Thurs night meet-up. If our place was big enough for more than two people, I'd invite everyone here. However, unless someone comes up with a way to shrink to about 6" in size, I won't be able to to. :)

Cheers! Alayne

HI ALL

This is Fred in WV.  I can not make it there either, but I sure hope there is DVD of it later.  My MP doctor ask me if there would be a DVD, that he was interested in aging.  He wants a copy of the DVD if you do have one later.

Remember, we are all in this together and I am pulling for us.

Freddie,
There will be a Vimeo/YouTube video made of my 15 minute scientific presentation, plus any questions, and we hope to also get together some video for Vimeo/YouTube of the event and people and interesting stuff as well. Just like we did at Karolinska, actually.. :)

Aide-memoire - Karolinska Video:
The HD (High Definition) version of the main video is available at URL http://www.vimeo.com/955029 and, for slower net connections, a less detailed version is available at http://vimeo.com/952759

There are a number of informal video 'transcripts' available. Paul's 10 minute overview of the conference for YouTube is up at URL:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JKJ4Wc5gEY

My pastiche of the reception at the City Hall is on Vimeo at URL
http://www.vimeo.com/939607

Paul has a collection of 'outtakes' at:

Alayne (and everybody else who might be able to attend the Friday symposium)

Please make sure you register for the dinner. The Foundation will reimburse the $30 cost, please don't let that be a hindrance to you.

The more people we have present at the Friday evening symposium, and have present at the dinner, the more of an impact we will be able to make in the main conference:):)

This is an important conference, as it allows us to get our science out to a much wider audience of researchers. It is the science which will eventually allow us to deliver help to the folk in our society who are so sick, Medicine can't keep ignoring the science for ever...

I plan to attend and hope to see other MPers there.  I enquired for more specifics and Aubrey said that the seminar itself is from 5 pm to 8 pm and will probably have a break around 6:30.  The dinner is 8 pm until around 9:30ish and there will be drinks afterwards.

I asked (for my brother, who might attend), if one had to leave early if it would be O.K. and he said that one could leave at the break, but just be sure to register on the web site.

I plan to arrive for the complimentary drinks and reception at 4 pm and stay for the dinner.

It will be great to see Alayne and Jacks again, and of course, the rest of the MP team.  I also look forward to meeting Amy in person and hopefully some of the rest of you who live in the area.

I'll try my best to make it, but I definitely will miss the Sunday presentation due to previous plans.

If there is a get-together on Thursday, I can probably attend.

I thought I should mention that it is only the Friday seminar that is free.  The conference on Saturday and Sunday is fairly expensive to attend.

Jacks and I plan to be there at 4 and will stay through the dinner after the talks. Really looking forward to seeing some very familiar faces again - TM, Meg, Joyce. And meeting Amy, Paul and others for the first time.

I don't know of anything going on Thursday night. I would have liked to have planned something, but belatedly remembered that I have a Thurs evening class I can't miss.

However, it would be nice to put faces to the MP folks who are coming, like Mindy and Efrenz. How will we know who you are? :)  If you'd like, you can pm me your cell #'s and we can find you there.

It be easier if I just wore my wizard's cap, then you'd see me from a mile off. Alas, I gave it up, as it doesn't really block much light. :D

See you all there!
Alayne

P.S. I think that traffic will be pretty hellacious getting to/into UCLA. The LA Film Festival is also running there concurrently with crowds of folks. When I drove past the other day, it looked like a big cluster yuck. Probably giving yourself some extra time to get there, especially if you're unfamiliar with the area, isn't a bad idea.

This story was just on NPR  re Alzheimer's and calcium regulation. Just wondering if it could be linked to the MP theory, as the 1,25D would be affecting the calcium regulation, hence the findings in this study. Anyway, since it is topical, it might be discussed at the conference.

Hope all goes well!

Gene,

I also gave Mr. de Grey a heads up on the Marshall Protocol via email about a year ago after reading an article published about him... I hope maybe this also got his interest? This could testify to everyone who does and can spread the word to the science and medical community....maybe just maybe my email sparked some interest with him and then he tuned in more at the conference?  You go Dr. Marshall .. I cannot wait to hear how the conference played out.

Thanks, Jeannine, Gene, and especially Nick Bowler:)

I am working on the video of my presentation right now, it should be up online sometime Tuesday:)

There are also several other presentations which I think we should discuss in this "perspective" forum, as they illustrate how closely our science meshes with recent results from other research groups.

Dear Trevor Marshall,

It's interesting to note also that some of the worlds large research labs seem be taking future investment decisions which are progressively moving towards your type of research :

In a recent announcement on future projects, the CEO of Roche, William Burns, stated that his group is working on a molecule for breast, lung and colon cancer which starves the tumor.
Roche will be on 6th International Congress on Autoimmunity on september 2008 ;)

Whilst the Novartis group, to the great chagrin of rhumatologists, has withdrawn the widely prescribed anti-inflammatory drug (spondylarthrite ankylosante), phenylbutazone, in order to concentrate on new lines of research... hummm :?

It's perhaps understandable that the large labs are hesitant when current medications and treatments are challenged given the huge amount of marketing they carry out and the possible financial impact that new research may have on their entire financial position.

I was already 5 minutes over time at that point :) There was a lot crammed into this conference, from 9am to 11pm both Saturday and Sunday. There was a lot of interest, the majority was positive. Of course, there was one know-it-all MD who was convinced the VDR does not really exist...

Excellent presentation.  I'm sure you generated a lot of interest at the conference.  Wish I could have been there.

Will you be posting anything about the sorts of questions and responses you got at the poster sessions? Looking forward to seeing what this audience thought of it all.

Leaving them wanting more... so they will end up looking up your research on their own... very clever planning on your part to use up all the Q&A time! ;)

This presentation is a very nice distillation of the best of the science as it stands now. Adding in references to other presenters and their work was a nice touch too. Good job Dr. Marshall !!!

Bravo!!! Dr. Marshall....You did a excellant job and all in that short of time. It was easy to understand and answered questions the skeptics always ask:D I liked the comment about Vit D being a feedback loop versus other vitamins.

I was reading about Dr. Cui research (see LINK) ...it certainly meshes with your research and testifies to the fact that science/medicine can no longer ignore the facts. I am curious as to what you think about his measuring tools as how he is choosing his human donors. What do you think about the difference of murine vs human in this study?

What other science/research did you see that was eye catching?

Excellent work, Shegeek :) People will look at the video and take notice now, whereas it may get lost amongst all the clutter when Aubrey's staff get their version online.

I have already sent the video link to Aubrey (last night). So please let me know if there are any difficulties posting it at the blog.

I wasn't planning a transcript. Aubrey's staff will be doing one eventually, or so I was told, and I haven't thought to produce one of our own. Mind you, I had no idea how slow they would be getting everything completed :)

No worries. I thought this the kind of conference that had both a written, bound paper as well as the powerpoint presentation. As you know those are often quite different so I wanted both. Greedy I guess.

There was a Procedings booklet handed out (in the video I was using one as my mouse-pad:)), but I haven't seen a PDF posted for it yet (I assume they printed from something). Maybe this is an issue which can be raised on the

I have a couple different versions of the same video from the Anti-Aging conference to share. Basically, it covers the ARF's activities at the UCLA conference.

http://vimeo.com/1293451 (large format, for faster connections)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJvKexRgmSM (smaller format, for slower connections)

p.s. I think we all enjoyed meeting our fellow MP patients on the West coast.

Paul,

Nice 'insider' look at the conference.
Looks like 'Team MP' generated a lot of interest!

Did your pan across the empty sun-drenched tables before showing the MP crew settled under the shade of the trees have some special significance to you? :)

I think that anyone reading on the MP forums who wonders if there are people getting really 'cured' on the MP should watch this video ... with the thought in mind that all of you (Trevor, Meg, Amy, Belinda, Joyce, etc.) are former Th1 (CFS, Sarc, etc.) patients ... and you are all there, looking really well, interacting effectively with other researchers and enjoying your freedom from light sensitivity wonderfully!

And what was that interesting food Dr. Marshall was eating at the end of the clip anyways? ;)

Ahh, chocolate... a favorite topic all around these parts... :)

One other question ... was it really as loud in the poster presentation area as the video seemed to make to be?

I can't imagine how a person could have a real conversation with all the background noise. (Or is that my neuro-herx/IP making up reaility again?)

It is usually pretty loud in poster sessions. The room used at UCLA was smallish, and the free alcohol tended to add to the volume even more. It was nevertheless easy enough to hold a conversation when one was focused upon doing that (and not de-focused by the alcohol).

The poster sessions ran from 9pm-11.30pm-ish both evenings. Lectures started at 9am, Long days indeed...

Here is an interesting study indicating one of the possible anti-aging mechanisms in which nuclear hormone receptors may participate.  It shows the involvement of an orphan nuclear receptor, Essrb (estrogen related receptor beta), as a transcription factor involved in the induction of fibroblasts (differentiated cells) into stem cells (undifferentatied cells).  Essrb interacts with the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and at least the alpha form of this gene (Essra) possesses a vitamin D reponse element and is therefore likely regulated by the VDR.

Could they possibly repeat that study here in Michigan or the U.S.?

I would love to volunteer. Maybe they could use cord blood.

My kidneys could handle it.:)

Wait do men have estrogen receptors?
