Thanks for those, Paul. It's so sad that so much money, time and energy is spent and many of the answers are already here, right in front of everyone's nose!!

Quoting...

"Schizophrenia and manic depression appear to have some degree of etiological overlap, and some of these genes proved to cluster in a region associated with immune function, though it’s impossible to draw any causal conclusions from either of these tendencies."

more to be pitied than scorned....although a nice wad of their wasted grant cash would be nice...

This was in the news this morning here.

http://www2.independenttribune.com/content/2009/oct/12/cmc-leaders-enroll-murdock-study/

David Murdock, the owner of Dole foods, basically owns a former mill town in our area. When the textile industry tanked, he decided to turn the city into a Research Institute with the citizens serving as research guinea pigs. All the major universities in our area, including the local hospitals, are participating in his venture. Duke, UNC- Chapel Hill, NC State all have branch offices in Kannapolis now. It seems to me much of what they are looking for has already been described by Dr. Marshall and without understanding the metagenome they may never understand the data they collect. In any case, these guys are eager for a win in their column.  35 million is a lot of money just to collect genetic data. Maybe it's an avenue ARF can pursue. We certainly have a lot of data already to support the MP.

Thanks for sharing that story, Caitie.

I think we've learned that this problem will not be solved with larger sample sizes.

Look at some of the numbers thrown around at this meeting and ask yourself if it makes sense:

I love the comment to that last article:

"If it requires 3000 million years of person observation to detect, it aint very important"

OK, it does require some grounding in theoretical statistics to understand, but it gets right to the heart of the matter...
