Hi Aussie Barb       Dr marshall has recommended a antihistamine for Andreas benicar problem. Could you let me know which members i can message that are taking antihistamines to get them through the protocol so i can get some knowledge of thier experience. It would be helpful.Andrea is about to trial a low dose of benicar to see her response. Thanks Mark

I didn't 'recommend' antihistamines, I was asked if they were compatible, and said that some members were successfully using Benadryl.

It is important that members understand the difference between "Dr Marshall recommended"  and "Dr Marshall answered that.." :) In any case, I hope that one of the members who have used Benadryl while on the MP will be able to share their experiences with Andrea :)

Andrea,
I have used benadryl quite regularly since I started the MP and I see no adverse side affects. I used the tablets for overall itching with some success. I also use the gel on itchy spots.
Lately I've been using benadryl as a sleep aid and it works quite well.
I see no reason to advise against it.

Lately the news has reported that "anticholinergics, block acetylcholine, a nervous system neurotransmitter".  Pretty sure that Benadryl is a anticholinergic ... Lee

FYI, I have read that Benadryl can be harmful to the liver as is Tylenol, if taken too much.

I was dismayed to read this article recently: http://www.physorg.com/news198238000.html

I've been using Benadryl to help with sleep problems almost since beginning the MP. It has worked really well for me but now I can't seem to do without it. I don't know if I am addicted to it or if it's IP which is creating the need for it. Anyway, I feel that for me at this time, lack of sleep would be more detrimental to my health than taking a Benadryl every night.

From the article:
"We found that taking one anticholinergic significantly increased an individual's risk of developing mild cognitive impairment and taking two of these drugs doubled this risk."

Doesn't seem that they are giving the dosing frequency or levels in this study. But considering that "taking two" doubles the risk, I wouls suspect it is a dose dependent effect.

I try to live by the "less is better" approach. I'm taking an antihistamine/anticholinergic (hydroxyzine) as a sleep aid and to calm skin symptoms (itch). But the dose is less than 10mg per day. My cognitive is better if I get more sleep. Taking this medication does not seem to affect cognitive function. But if it was, would I notice? ;)

I know I sound like a broken record.........but.......while on MP.......sleep when sleep comes to you. You do not need to sleep just because it is (night) 'bedtime'. Sleep for us is when we 'can'.

If I sleep half the day away.........and can't go to sleep at night....then that is when I do the dishes, vacuum or post to people on MP and then when I can no longer hold my eyes open, then I go to bed even if it is 5am or (whatever time). I have a lot of insomnia, but by doing this I get some sleep.

Now, let's discuss rest........I work so hard trying to sleep (when I force it) that I get absolutely no rest, PLUS, you have to remember you are ill and that really racks your body for rest. The pain alone can keep you tired.....so....before you go to sleep do something w/the pain so you can sleep comfortably. Even tho you go to sleep your brain still knows your body is in pain...that is why I say address the pain.

LASTLY, extra Benicar instead of something else, I have upped my Benicar to 60mg from 40mg at bedtime and if I go to bed within 1 hr of taking it....I usually have a good nights sleep. 20mg of Benicar under the tongue tells the brain to calm...that also has worked for me and made me feel like it has given me a light at the end of the tunnel.

Basically, what I am saying, is quit fighting sleep and let it come whatever time of day. Our bodies are not normal w/these diseases we suffer....so until we are well...we need to learn how to live w/it and try to be as comfortable as possible.

HANG IN THERE, WE WILL MAKE IT!!!!BARNEY:D

I agree with Barney re sleep.  I've had many sleep-full days and sleepless nights during my MP journey thus far.  I've gotten to the point of taking it [sleep] whenver it comes and just being thankful and grateful for it.  The MP has definitely taught me flexibility.

Barney and Toni, you are right about sleeping when you can. I can usually fall asleep during the day fine----without any Benadryl. For some reason my nervous system gets revved up at night and I feel a buzzing or vibration throughout my whole body which keeps me alert and awake. I will try getting my Zzzzzs whenever I can and see how it works out. It would require a lot of flexibility, not only on my part, but on my family's part, too. Oh, well, worth a try.:)

Thank you so much for giving some insight for sleep. I have been working full time and doing MP for more than two years. Often times I come home from work tired, sleep through the evening /early night and wake up middle of the night. I have learned to sleep whenever it comes.

Yes we apologise, Dr. Marshall stated that Benadryl does not interact with the benicar.  Sorry, Mark

I recently took OTC diphenhydramine as I've been struggling with insomnia. I forget the brand but it was marketed as a sleep-aid.

Both times I took it, at 50mg and 12.5mg, I had a horrible reaction consisting of an elevated and pounding heart rate and breaking out in sweats.

I'm not sure if this was due to the diphenhydramine or one of the other innate ingredients though.

Benadryl gave me a fast heart rate and sweat. So I could  not rest. My dermotalogist gave me a prescription for  hydroxine. (for itch) It helped a lot. Now my insomina is getting resisted to that.

Summer months seem to have a toll on my sleep. Hope things will get better with my sleep as I am getting ready to go back to work (teach) next week.

Help,

Is anyone taking a brand of benadryl which is white in colour.  Received mine last week and tablets are blue - allergic to blue!  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hope
