I took a look at the legal vs illegal foods on the SCD and was surprised to see that aspartame is allowed as are some nightshades and D foods. Otherwise, it looks to be a very low carb diet as proposed by this protocol.
JanEE, I plan to look into the Whole9 guidelines, too! There are always new things to learn re supporting our immune systems and general health.
Basically, it's trial and error. I find that avoiding nightshades helps even though I love them. Also, avoiding wheat has been good for my GI issues, but I do miss bread terribly.
Michael Pollan wrote in "The Omnivore's Dilemma" or "In Defence of Food" that we should eat from the two outermost aisles of the supermarket: produce and meats. If we stick to whole foods as much as possible, we'll have fewer health issues. I find that to be a good general rule, but I avoid fish and certain starchy vegetables as well.

Paisleykilt, I posted about this previously, but it was back aways. I missed bread so much that I bought a bread mix and made my own gluten-free bread. The diet also seemed to make me a little light-headed, and I thought maybe I wasn't eating enough carbs. It reminded me of the way I felt when I was on the Atkin's diet years ago. A little more fruit and one slice of gluten-free bread, toasted, with my breakfast did the trick. It was quite different than the artisan bread I was used to but it grew on me and I still eat my one slice a day. The other hard part about giving up grains was no pasta in my homemade soup. I've drifted back to using it, but will give it up again and will go back to throwing in some extra vegies.
I hadn't remembered that aspartame was allowed, but haven't used sweeteners for years. I thought honey and pure maple syrup were the only sweeteners allowed because they are both single-chain sugars.
I was looking something up in Breaking the Vicious Cycle just now and thought I might even read the book again, but maybe I should wait until I read the new one first. It could get confusing. Maybe I'll end up with a hybrid of both of them.

My daughter Bethers & I are still very much on the SCDiet (since Mar2010) – doing very well & do not feel at all deprived. I was off SCDiet briefly last summer when I had food poisoning & other GI problems along with a highly over-responsive immune system. Later (after my August hospitalization); I realized that I’d become allergic to all the foods (SCD, of course) I'd been eating.
No - one does not eat all the ‘legal’ food, whether we’re talking about MP or SCD (artificial sweeteners). We only use dates & honey – no aspartame, stevia or sugar. We avoid all corn products (not allowed on SCDiet anyway) & all GMO – genetically modified food. We do not consume any yogurt. Bethers omits dairy & my dairy is limited to maybe 2-3 servings/week. We’ve joined a local CSA – Community Supported Agriculture – farm. So, we drive to the farm to pick up our weekly allotment of ever-changing locally grown organic vegetables. Beth & I continue to eat 7+ servings of fruits & veggies/ day. Great desserts!
The baked goods on SCDiet are delicious, even though they must be prepared by us – not available in stores. There are some specialty SCDiet bakeries, but we choose to bake our own SCD cookies, muffins, & cakes, etc. There are a few SCDiet blogs & a forum where SCD recipes are posted & links to SCDiet bakeries & cookbooks.
Healthier Without Wheat by Stephen Wangen is a very good book explaining the differences between celiac, wheat allergies & wheat sensitivities, etc. It’s at our local library & can be purchased thru Amazon.
Following my GI problems that lasted June-August 2011 & required 3 trips to the ER due to dehydration (diarrhea & vomiting) & 1-week in the hospital – I worked with Joyce to calm down several food allergies resulting from the food poisoning. I’ve been told that both SCDiet & Paleo diets focus on foods which are naturally low in allergens. After last summer’s Immune challenges – I’m all for avoiding food allergies.
I love that we can enjoy baked goods without wheat (using ground blanched almond ‘flour’). Yes, it is not fluffy or ‘yeasty’. But after last year’s ‘yeast over growth’ (Candida) contributing to my GI problems – that is one Good-Bye I don’t mind!
A diet can be tweaked so much that it’s no longer anything like the original diet…. Therefore, no different from the food you would normally eat.
Food likes & dislikes are very emotional.
Wishing you all calm tummies & healthy recoveries….. Marber

Martha, great to hear from you and that you're doing fine now. I've strayed a bit from the diet/plan I was on last summer but, as I wrote above, I'm thinking about starting this new Whole 30/Whole 9. I bought their new book and love the style of their writing and explanations of why certain foods are not good for us. So easy to understand. As with SCD, their main focus is on health, and eating 'clean' food. They don't even refer to it as a diet, but a way of eating. It sounds very similar to the SCD, in that it doesn't advocate grains, sugar, or dairy. My daughter has been on it for a few months and really likes it, and I like the idea of being able to have access to her advice when I need it, as well as exchange recipes.
On the subject of wheat, I've listened to Dr. Wm. Davis' videos on youtube and they are enlightening. I think they've been mentioned on this thread earlier. Not sure. All this information sure makes it a lot easier to give up certain things.
I agree about the tweaking, but if they're so similar, and even their goals much the same, it almost seems like they're interchangeable. In the end we know, as individuals, that each of us is unique, as well as our food preferences, and even the way we respond to food.
I wish you and Beth continued success, progress and, above all, good health.
Jan

Interesting comments!
I have not read Dr Davis' book. I found Dr Wangen's book (above) so clearly explained the differences between celiac & other wheat digestive problems, that I've looked no furthur. Dr Wangen wrote an earlier book titled: Iritable Bowel Syndrome Solution.
Candida was a huge problem which surfaced for me last summer, which Dr Blaney suspected & my reaction to pulsed Flucanazole confirmed - emphatically!
Candida was so bad, it could have begun while I was being treated (2000-7) for lyme with high dose zithromax (the only abx I had not developed allergic responses to)? When hospitalized a year ago for GI problems, I was put on a liquid diet - which was sugar loaded, except for the greasy chicken broth. I should have chosen the artificial sweetened liquids instead. By the end of the week in the hospital, I was in much worse shape. But, good discoveries can come from difficult situations.
With so many GI problems, it was very difficult to determine my treatment. I'm very grateful to Joyce for her incredible & ongoing Food Allergy treatment & guidence!! And, thank goodness for that life-saving (greasy) chicken broth, because that was all I could tolerate consuming. And, when my 'stool' was tested it was discovered that I wasn't digesting fats. So, I take digestive enzymes. I have a CF gene mutation, which can effect the pancrease functioning. It all makes sense...now.
I hope this may help other MPers. It seems that GI puzzles are part of our bacterial recovery on MP. Marber
EDIT ---- It seems there could be some confusion re: LEGAL sweeteners on SCDiet….
I copied this is from the SCDiet Legal/Illegal List:
“When symptom free, one aspartame sweetened soft drink per week is allowed - (Elaine Gottschall). But see Aspartame in Knowledge Base, which states:
“Aspartame is a neurotoxin, and it damages the brain. It's one of what Dr. Blaylock calls excitotoxins - it excites the neurons and they are then damaged. It's just not a good idea for anyone to use it, plus it affects blood sugar, whereas saccharine does not.”
_____________________
The only “Legal” SCDiet sweeteners are: Honey, Dates, & Saccharine.
As you can see spartame is stronglyly warned against in the book by Elaine Gottschall: Breaking the Vicious Cycle Legal/Illegal List, just as there are strong warnings in our MP Knowledge Base. It's difficult to give up favorite food items......
I hope this help clarify SCD Legal Sweeteners. Marber
