Investigators in Washington found that diallyl sulfide, the substance in garlic that gives it the taste, is capable of killing campylo bacter, especially targetting its biofilm:

Onion contains diallyl sulfide too, right?
My stomach can't handle onion well, but maybe I should
eat more of it?:p

'Microbiome Experts' generally discourage using antibiotics because they profoundly disturb the flora in the GI tract. I am not sure I agree with them.
But it is interesting to contemplate why 'a balanced diet' might be helpful in maintaining an 'average flora' (I say 'average' as I am not convinced there is such a thing as 'a healthy flora' )

When I took Bactrim I noticed improvements in my head I hadn't previous to that abx, could that have been due to changes in the gut flora? When I finish working this summer I'm gonna try Bactrim only at higher dose Last time mino and clindy was in the mix..

I think there's some research linking gut microbiota with emotions (& autism). So maybe some of our 'neuro' improvements might actually be coming via effects on the gut?

Thx, Pgeek I think so at least. And some types of anxiety is definately connected to the gut.

We know bacteria produce antibiotics, perhaps this is a factor.
Best regards,
Mike

I have to be careful these days to avoid all spices as I have unexpected results. Pizza for instance will give me mouth ulcers, where it never was a problem before. I suspect garlic, but am not sure.
Best regards,
Mike

| I experience higher IP after eating something containing garlic (e.g. in guacamole), so I tend not to use it at all now.

If it is true that a substance in garlic causes bacteria-die off, your mouth-ulcers could be well regarded as IP from that die off......

I do consider the mouth ulcers as IP, but that is my supposition. Spices can have other effects other than antimicrobial actions so it is difficult for me to really know all that is going on, and if spices have multiple effects, microbes and microbe communities could be expected to have imponderable effects. I am just trying to find the sidewalk and stay out of the tall grass (and thorns).
